The Story of Chiron Vet CPD

That photo is me, Barney, stethoscope and reflex hammer in hand, two days before my third birthday in 1991. I remember telling my mum around this time that I wanted to be a vet or a teacher when I grow up.

Like most vets out there, I spent my entire journey through education working towards becoming a vet. All through primary school, secondary school, sixth form, gap year, and university.

During my time at university, I discovered a love of small animal surgery, and knew I wanted to pursue specialisation.

So even before I achieved my goal of becoming a vet in 2013, I had developed a new goal of becoming a specialist small animal surgeon. Then I passed my ECVS Diploma in 2021 and I didn’t have a goal anymore.

In one way, shape, or form, I had been chasing a professional goal for 29 years.

29 years.

After achieving specialisation, in the newfound absence of a goal after 29 years, I felt an immeasurable vacuum in my professional life.

An emptiness.

And I know I’m not the only specialist to have felt this way.

In hindsight maybe it should have been obvious that this could happen, but it took me a few months to realise and come to terms with it. And it’s something I’m quite open with my intern and resident colleagues to be wary of.

It just so happened that during a short period of furlough in 2020 in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, my mind wandered to what I could do with my skills in the future.

I started to think about what I could do to combine what I’m good at, what I love to do, and wrap it in a refreshing, unique business model that can bring a positive change to the veterinary industry.

Small animal surgery and teaching were no-brainers. They were two things I love and two things I think I’m good at. But I also noticed that outside of the veterinary industry there had been a recent boom in demand for personalised, to-your-door, convenience services. Think Amazon, Uber, Peloton, Deliveroo, Netflix.

We’re seeing more online, distance CPD provision in the vet industry, but I wanted to expand the limited options for provision of practical, face-to-face surgical CPD. Something more personalised, flexible, convenient, and friendly that doesn’t already exist in the vet industry.

All of these thoughts combined and the Chiron business model made absolute perfect sense.

And now here we are nearly three years later. Chiron is a registered company with multiple bookings already for its first year. I can’t wait to provide a friendly, bespoke service to the wonderful people who make up the vet industry and help them develop their skills and the care their patients receive.

Chiron has filled that vacuum and I couldn’t be happier.
